Beginner to Expert — Choose Your Rapid

Clear Creek offers more variety per mile than almost anywhere in Colorado. Every skill level finds the right stretch.

Clear Creek Trail Float
Golden to Highway 93 Bridge
Class I–II
Length: 4 mi Time: 1–2 hr Best: June–July

A relaxed float through Golden's open valley. Wide channels, gentle riffles, and beautiful mountain views. Perfect for families, beginners, and stand-up paddleboarders.

💡 Park at Clear Creek History Park; the trail parallels the run the whole way.
Lower Canyon — Cough Drop
Golden to Tucker Gulch
Class II–III
Length: 5 mi Time: 2–3 hr Best: May–Aug

The gateway run into the canyon. Continuous Class II with the named "Cough Drop" rapid offering a fun Class III punch. Great first whitewater experience — popular with guided half-day trips.

💡 Scout Cough Drop from river left before you run it the first time.
Upper Canyon — The Numbers
Idaho Springs to #1 Bridge
Class IV
Length: 7 mi Time: 3–4 hr Best: May–July

The signature Clear Creek run. Numbered rapids (#1 through #9) thunder through a narrow granite gorge. Continuous steep gradient, powerful hydraulics, and mandatory portage at #6 in high water. This is serious whitewater.

💡 Numbers #5 (Argo) and #6 (Tunnel) are the crux — always scout at high CFS.
Miner's Rush
Idaho Springs town run
Class III
Length: 3 mi Time: 1.5 hr Best: June–Aug

Runs right through downtown Idaho Springs — waves, holes, and a festive crowd. Easy shuttle, good flow range, and ideal for intermediate paddlers who want a quick high-quality run.

💡 The town put-in is at the Colorado Welcome Center (Exit 240); take out at the city park.
No Name Creek Confluence
Upper Idaho Springs
Class III+
Length: 2 mi Time: 1 hr Best: May–June (snowmelt)

A short, steep, and committing stretch that forms only at high snowmelt flows. Boulder gardens, pushy water, and technical lines. For experienced whitewater kayakers — not appropriate for raft trips at most levels.

💡 Check the USGS gauge at Idaho Springs — run between 400–700 CFS for the best experience.
Blackhawk Gorge — Expert Only
Central City Pkwy to Blackhawk
Class V
Length: 1.5 mi Time: 2–4 hr Best: Peak snowmelt only

Remote, committing, and relentlessly steep. Multiple mandatory portages, undercuts, and no bail-out options. Only attempted by expert kayakers with local knowledge and full safety gear. Not commercially guided.

⚠️ Do not enter without local beta, full rescue gear, and at least two paddlers with Class V experience.

Before You Go

📊
Check the Gauge
USGS gauge #06719505 at Idaho Springs. Ideal for Numbers: 250–500 CFS. Above 800 CFS it gets serious; above 1,200 CFS most outfitters close.
🩱
Dress for the Water
Clear Creek runs cold even in July (50–60°F). Wear or rent a wetsuit for anything beyond the Golden float. Wool or synthetic base layers only — no cotton.
🚌
Shuttle Logistics
Most runs require a car shuttle. Outfitters handle this for you. If self-guided, stage a vehicle at the takeout before driving to the put-in.
☀️
Afternoon Storms
Colorado gets daily afternoon thunderstorms June–August. Start early — aim to be off the water by 2 PM. Lightning in a canyon gorge is extremely dangerous.
🤿
Minimum Age
Most outfitters require age 7–10 for beginner trips and age 13–16 for Class IV. Check each operator's policy — weight and swimming ability matter too.
🅿️
Parking
Idaho Springs has free parking at the Colorado Welcome Center (Exit 240). Pay lots on 13th Ave downtown. Don't leave valuables in the car at trailhead pullouts.
